Oxford to Lechlade (6 nights)
Join us on this 6-night cruise as the Wessex Rose drifts away from Oxford’s historic heart.
We begin at Osney Lock, where the gentle hum of the river sets the pace for a tranquil journey upstream.
The first stretch meanders through lush countryside, past the charming village of Eynsham, where Swinford Bridge, a toll bridge dating back to the 18th century, spans the Thames. Here, Eynsham Lock provides a moment to pause and admire the surrounding meadows before the journey continues.
Further ahead, we glide past Bablock Hythe, once a historic ferry crossing and now a peaceful mooring spot. This stretch of the river is particularly serene, with willows dipping into the water and an occasional heron standing motionless by the reeds. The cruise passes through Pinkhill Lock, an idyllic spot nestled among nature reserves, and then Northmoor Lock, where the river winds through farmland and quiet backwaters.
Approaching Tadpole Bridge, a highlight of the route, the historic Trout Inn beckons with its inviting riverside garden, a perfect place for a relaxed pause. Beyond, the river becomes even more secluded as it flows towards Radcot Lock, one of the oldest on the Thames, dating back to 1892. Here, the medieval Radcot Bridge, believed to be the oldest surviving bridge on the river, offers a glimpse into the past.
As the journey continues, the boat reaches Grafton Lock, where the waters widen, providing a stunning view of the Oxfordshire countryside.
A highlight of this stretch of the Thames is a visit to Kelmscott Manor, the much-loved Cotswold retreat of William Morris, the celebrated designer, craftsman and leader of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Tucked away near Lechlade, this beautiful 17th-century manor house is surrounded by lush gardens and meadows that inspired much of Morris’s work.
Inside, the manor is carefully preserved, offering a glimpse into Morris’s life and legacy. Visitors can explore rooms filled with original furnishings, textiles and personal treasures belonging to Morris and his family, along with works by his close circle of artists and designers. The gardens, with their orchards and flower borders, remain much as Morris described them in his writings, ‘a heaven on earth’.
A visit here provides not only a connection to one of Britain’s most influential creative figures, but also a sense of the timeless beauty of the Upper Thames landscape that inspired him.
A little farther along lies Buscot Lock, the smallest on the Thames, known for its picturesque surroundings and charming weir. Finally, the cruise arrives in Lechlade, where the iconic spire of St. Lawrence’s Church comes into view. Here we moor for the final night, allowing guests to enjoy the village’s quaint atmosphere.
The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, guests bid farewell, carrying with them memories of winding waters, historic landmarks and the gentle rhythm of life on the Thames.
