Stoke Bruerne to Berkhamsted (6 nights)

This 6-night journey begins at Stoke Bruerne, where guests board the Wessex Rose at the visitor moorings.

Stoke Bruerne is a charming village, home to the Canal Museum, which provides fascinating insights into the history and development of Britain’s waterways. Before setting off, guests can enjoy the local area and take a walk along the towpath to see the iconic Blisworth Tunnel entrance.

Departing Stoke Bruerne, we navigate through the first lock and head south towards Cosgrove. The journey takes us through the peaceful countryside, passing over the impressive iron aqueduct spanning the River Great Ouse. In Cosgrove, guests can admire the ornate Soloman’s Bridge and the picturesque surroundings.

Continuing south, we cruise through Milton Keynes, passing Campbell Park with its landscaped gardens, art installations, and access to the town’s modern amenities. This stretch of canal offers a surprisingly green corridor through the urban area, with frequent glimpses of local wildlife along the way.

Next, we reach Fenny Stratford, where the canal’s single lock provides a brief but interesting stop. The lock here features a swing bridge across its chamber, an unusual and engaging sight for guests. From Fenny Stratford, the canal winds through tranquil farmland as we make our way towards Leighton Buzzard.

We overnight at Leighton Buzzard, a market town with convenient moorings close to the town centre. The Leighton Buzzard Railway is one of the country’s oldest narrow-gauge railways.

As we continue southward, the journey passes through the village of Slapton and the scenic countryside beyond. The canal gradually climbs towards the Chiltern Hills, with a series of locks at Marsworth providing stunning views over the surrounding landscape. Marsworth is a delightful spot for wildlife enthusiasts, as the nearby reservoirs attract a variety of bird species.

From Marsworth, we ascend the locks to reach the Tring Summit, also known as Bulbourne. This high point on the Grand Union Canal is surrounded by the Chiltern Hills and offers a peaceful, picturesque cruising experience. The Wessex Rose then begins its descent through Cowroast Lock, passing through wooded valleys and open fields as we approach Berkhamsted.

The final leg of the journey takes us into Berkhamsted, a historic town with strong connections to British history. Guests can explore the well-preserved remains of Berkhamsted Castle, where William the Conqueror was offered the English crown in 1066. The town also boasts a lively high street, independent shops, and inviting cafes.

The cruise concludes with a final evening in Berkhamsted, giving guests time to explore, relax, and reflect on the diverse landscapes, historical landmarks, and natural beauty experienced throughout their journey along the canal.
