Leamington Spa to Norton Junction(5 nights)

This 5-night canal journey along the Grand Union Canal from Leamington Spa to Norton Junction is a captivating cruise through tranquil countryside, historic locks, and charming canal-side villages. The adventure begins at the Leamington Spa moorings, where guests step aboard the Wessex Rose hotel boat.

The town, with its elegant Regency architecture and beautifully maintained parks, offers a delightful glimpse into its past as a fashionable spa destination. As the boat sets off, it glides gently through the serene waters, passing under graceful bridges and through the peaceful outskirts of the town.

The canal soon leads into the countryside, with open fields and clusters of woodland providing a picturesque backdrop. The first locks encountered are the Radford Locks, where the rhythmic operation of the lock gates offers a fascinating insight into traditional canal navigation. Further along, the Fosse Locks guide the boat toward Itchington Bottom Lock, where we will moor for the night. Nearby, the village of Long Itchington invites exploration, with its selection of traditional pubs, such as the historic Two Boats Inn, which has served canal travellers for generations.

Continuing the cruise, the canal winds through more open countryside, eventually reaching the Stockton Locks. This flight of eight locks, known for its efficient design and scenic surroundings, presents a rewarding challenge. The boat ascends through the locks, each turn revealing another stretch of beautiful landscape. After navigating the locks, the journey progresses toward Calcutt Top Lock, where the nearby marina reflects the ongoing importance of canals in modern leisure boating.

As the journey continues, we approach Napton Junction, a significant meeting point for the Grand Union and Oxford Canals. The waterway here is lively with passing boats, each heading toward different destinations. The cruise then leads into Braunston, a village often regarded as the heart of the English canal network. Braunston is steeped in canal heritage, with its historic boatyards and a charming 13th-century church that stands proudly on the hill. The Braunston Locks, a flight of six locks, guide us through this bustling section of the canal, and the journey continues toward the entrance of the Braunston Tunnel.

The Braunston Tunnel, an atmospheric passage over two thousand yards long, presents a memorable experience. Inside, the cool, damp walls and the gentle echo of water create a sense of timelessness. Emerging from the tunnel, we cruise past the Buckby Locks, where the canal landscape becomes more secluded. The canal gently curves toward Norton Junction, where the journey concludes. This peaceful mooring, where the Grand Union Canal meets the Leicester Line, is surrounded by quiet countryside, making it a perfect place to reflect on the voyage.

Throughout the cruise, the scenery showcases the rich natural beauty and historical significance of the Grand Union Canal. From the elegant townscape of Leamington Spa to the industrious past preserved in Braunston’s boatyards, every stretch of the canal offers a story. Locks, tunnels, and junctions along the way provide insight into the engineering marvels that shaped Britain’s waterways, creating an experience that blends relaxation with discovery, history with scenic charm.
