Berkhamsted to Willow Tree Marina (6 nights)
The Wessex Rose sets sail from the charming market town of Berkhamsted, steeped in history and nestled along the Grand Union Canal.
As we ease away from the moorings, the journey begins with a gentle cruise through the Hertfordshire countryside.
The first stretch takes us past the ruins of Berkhamsted Castle, once a Norman stronghold where William the Conqueror secured the English crown in 1066.
The canal winds peacefully, lined with lush greenery and historic waterside cottages, before we moor for the night at Bank Mill, near Bridge 143, a tranquil spot to rest under the evening sky.
The next morning, we continue towards Fishery Lock, where the canal flows through the picturesque town of Hemel Hempstead. With its blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy, this stretch offers glimpses of historic mills and industrial heritage. Cruising onward, we reach Kings Langley, once home to a 13th-century royal palace, where England’s medieval kings once walked. The canal leads us through rolling countryside, and soon, we arrive at Hunton Bridge, a charming waterside hamlet with stunning views of the surrounding valley.
As we approach Cassiobury Park, one of Watford’s most beautiful green spaces, the landscape opens up, offering a stunning contrast between woodland trails and historic parkland. The former estate of the Earls of Essex, this vast parkland is home to nature trails, historic bridges, and remnants of grand avenues. We glide past Frogmore Wharf, once a bustling industrial site, before continuing our journey toward Denham Country Park, where we moor for the night amid serene countryside and nature reserves teeming with wildlife.
The following day, the cruise takes us through Yiewsley, once a thriving hub of brickmaking, where remnants of industrial heritage still dot the canal banks. We pass through Three Bridges, an extraordinary engineering feat where a canal, railway, and road intersect in a unique triple-layered crossing, a testament to Victorian ingenuity.
As the final evening approaches, the Wessex Rose reaches Willow Tree Marina, a peaceful mooring nestled amid waterside beauty. Guests enjoy a leisurely evening, reflecting on the journey through England’s rich history and breathtaking scenery. The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, guests bid farewell, carrying with them cherished memories of their time drifting along the Grand Union Canal.
