Limehouse to Willow Tree Marina (5 nights)
Welcome on board the Wessex Rose as we journey along the Grand Union Canal which reveals a striking blend of vibrant cityscapes, lively communities and peaceful countryside.
We begin at Limehouse Basin, a vibrant marina in London’s East End. Surrounded by stylish restaurants, cosy pubs and independent shops, Limehouse is full of character. It also provides easy access to nearby markets, including the world-famous Brick Lane Market, perfect for those wanting a taste of local life and culture.
From Limehouse, our route heads west through the city to Little Venice, one of London’s most enchanting waterside districts. Here, colourful narrowboats, tree-lined waterways and waterside cafés create a relaxed charm in the heart of the capital.
We pause to visit the London Canal Museum, where fascinating exhibits tell the story of Britain’s canal network and its crucial role during the Industrial Revolution. Historic boats and unique artefacts bring the waterways’ heritage vividly to life.
As we continue, the canal threads through the diverse neighbourhoods of Alperton and Southall, where London’s cultural richness is reflected in the communities that have grown along the waterway. The urban backdrop gradually softens as we enter the long, lock-free stretch of the Paddington Arm, passing through the historic Cowley Lock, a true gateway between city and countryside.
Soon the greenery of Denham Country Park and the scenic Fray’s River appear, signalling our approach to Uxbridge, a town steeped in canal history. The waterway here is framed by tranquil landscapes and wildlife, offering a sharp contrast to the city bustle left behind.
Our cruise concludes at Willow Tree Marina, a peaceful and picturesque haven surrounded by walking trails and open green spaces. It’s the perfect place to unwind, stretch your legs and reflect on the journey from London’s vibrant heart to the calm of the countryside.
This cruise offers the perfect balance of historic landmarks, cultural variety and serene landscapes, all seen from the unique perspective of London’s canals.
