Berkhamsted to Stoke Bruerne (6 nights)
The journey begins in Berkhamsted, a vibrant cultural town and the birthplace of author Graham Greene. Berkhamsted is home to the well-preserved ruins of the 11th-century Norman castle, where William the Conqueror received the English crown after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. This historic gem provides a fitting start to a cruise that will traverse centuries of history, nature, and engineering marvels along the UK’s beautiful waterways.
Departing Berkhamsted, the boat ascends through wooded valleys and open fields, heading northward toward Cowroast Lock. The journey continues to the Tring Summit, also known as Bulbourne, the highest point on the Grand Union Canal, surrounded by the picturesque Chiltern Hills, offering a peaceful and scenic cruising experience.
From Tring, we descend the locks at Marsworth, where guests are treated to panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Marsworth is a haven for wildlife lovers, with nearby reservoirs attracting an array of bird species. The journey carries on through the village of Slapton, surrounded by scenic rural landscapes.
Next, we arrive at Leighton Buzzard, a bustling market town with moorings conveniently located near the town centre. Here, guests can explore the historic market square, browse the local shops, or visit the Leighton Buzzard Railway, one of the oldest narrow-gauge railways in the country.
Continuing north, the boat winds its way through peaceful farmland en-route to Fenny Stratford. This stop features a unique swing bridge built directly over the canal’s single lock, offering an intriguing sight for guests to enjoy.
As we journey onward, the boat glides through Milton Keynes, offering a surprisingly green corridor through the urban sprawl. Guests can catch glimpses of wildlife while passing Campbell Park, which features landscaped gardens, contemporary art installations, and access to modern town amenities.
The route then leads us to the tranquil village of Cosgrove, where passengers can admire the ornate Soloman’s Bridge and explore the charming surroundings. The canal here crosses the impressive iron aqueduct spanning the River Great Ouse, offering spectacular views of the countryside.
Finally, we approach our journey’s end in the historic village of Stoke Bruerne. Before disembarking, guests may walk along the towpath to view the iconic Blisworth Tunnel entrance. Stoke Bruerne is home to the Canal Museum, which offers fascinating insights into the history and evolution of Britain’s inland waterways. The cruise concludes at the visitor moorings, where the Wessex Rose will be moored, marking the end of an unforgettable 6-night adventure through the heart of England.
