Leamington Spa to Dorridge(4 nights)

Welcome onboard as we embark on this leisurely 4-night canal journey along the Grand Union Canal from Leamington Spa to Dorridge, a serene escape into the heart of the English countryside.

The adventure begins with guests boarding the Wessex Rose hotel boat at the peaceful Leamington Spa moorings, near Clements Street Bridge. As she gently glides away, it passes through the first locks, known as the Cape Locks, offering stunning views of the Warwick skyline. The canal here runs through an area once bustling with industrial activity, with remnants of its historical significance still visible along the banks. The Wessex Rose will moor at the Warwick moorings, perfectly situated for a day of exploration. Warwick, with its deep historical roots, offers fascinating sights like Warwick Castle, founded by William the Conqueror in 1068, and St Mary’s Church, which has stood for over 900 years. The town’s cobblestone streets and independent shops invite leisurely strolls and discovery.

The journey continues with a sense of anticipation as the boat approaches the legendary Hatton Flight, often referred to as the Stairway to Heaven. This series of 21 locks presents a rewarding challenge and showcases breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The locks, originally constructed in the 1790s and later widened in the 1930s to accommodate larger vessels, stand as a testament to Britain’s canal engineering prowess. With each lock conquered, the sense of accomplishment grows, and soon the boat reaches the atmospheric Shrewley Tunnel. This historic passage, with its separate towpath tunnel, evokes a sense of stepping back in time.

The adventure continues as the boat moves through the Shrewley Tunnel, an engineering marvel where water drips from the brickwork, creating a cool, misty atmosphere. Beyond the tunnel, the canal winds through open fields and woodland, gradually approaching the final destination: Dorridge Kings Arms Bridge. The tranquil surroundings here, coupled with the canal’s history of transporting goods during the Industrial Revolution, make for a fitting end to the voyage.

The adventure concludes with a hearty breakfast enjoyed onboard as the boat rests once again at the Dorridge Kings Arms Bridge. The gentle sounds of the canal and the memories of historic sites, countryside vistas, and the tranquil rhythm of life on the water linger as guests bid farewell.

Along the way, the journey offers more than just a scenic escape. Hatton Locks stands as a testament to engineering ingenuity, while the Shrewley Tunnel provides a captivating glimpse into the canal’s past. Warwick Castle adds a touch of medieval splendour to the experience, and Leamington Spa, with its elegant Regency architecture and charming Pump Room Gardens, leaves a lasting impression. Together, these elements create an enchanting and unforgettable canal journey through history, nature, and the simple pleasures of life along the water.
